Grand Feathers Quilt Class Description

An antique Princess Feathers quilt, in the “Wicker Room” at the historic Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan, immediately caught Mary Elizabeth’s eye and inspired her fresh, colourful version of a classic four block “feather” quilt.  To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Annual Needle Arts Seminar at the Hotel, she wanted to use a joyous riot of colour to honour the famed Carlton Varney of Dorothy Draper Design who fearlessly used colour to create the distinctive and iconic interiors of the hotel. It seemed a natural choice to use fabrics designed by Kaffe Fassett, to provide that wonderful colour and to honour his role as the first speaker and teacher at the seminars.

Mary Elizabeth used the Apliquick™ applique technique to make this quilt.  If you know her, you know she is a no fuss, not a lot of gadgets quilter, but these tools won her over and they are now one of her favourites!  She feels that the same way that the rotary cutter, ruler and mat revolutionized quilting over 40 years ago, the Apliquick™ method will revolutionize applique work.  If you have been nervous about needleturn applique, this edge turn method will help you understand what happens behind the seams and increase your confidence in doing applique work.  In this class you will learn the tips and tricks that she has mastered with this method, as you create your own version of Grand Feathers.
